Barapole rafting happens at T. Shettigeri in South Coorg — about 250 km from Bangalore. Here's the best route, how long it takes, and where to stop and stay along the way.
## Where Is Shettigeri?
T. Shettigeri is a small village in South Coorg (Kodagu district), near Gonikoppal and Virajpet, and it's the launch point for Barapole white water rafting. It sits close to the Glenlorna Tea Estate and around 12 km from the beautiful Iruppu Falls, deep in the forested foothills of the Brahmagiri Hills.
From Bangalore the drive is roughly 250 km and takes about 4.5 to 6 hours depending on traffic out of the city and stops along the way.
## The Best Route: Bangalore → Mysore → Gonikoppal(Take left to Ponnampete road) → Shettigeri --> Take right yolk towards KKR junction.
The most reliable route runs via Mysore:
Bangalore → Mysore (via NH275 / Mysore Road, ~145 km) → Hunsur → Gonikoppal → T. Shettigeri.
The Bangalore–Mysore stretch is fast, expressway-grade road. After Mysore you head toward Hunsur and then turn into Coorg via Gonikoppal, where the landscape shifts to coffee estates and forest. The final stretch to Shettigeri is scenic but narrower — drive carefully, especially in monsoon when roads are wet and visibility can drop.
## Travel Time & When to Leave
Plan for 5.5–6.5 hours of total travel. Because Barapole runs are best in the morning (after our daily water-level check), most visitors either:
1. Leave Bangalore very early (around 4–5 AM) to reach Shettigeri for a late-morning or midday slot, or 2. Travel the day before and stay overnight nearby, then raft fresh the next morning.
We strongly recommend option 2 during monsoon weekends. A 5 AM start plus a long wet-weather drive is tiring, and arriving relaxed makes the rafting far more enjoyable. Aim to arrive at the launch point 30 minutes before your slot for the safety briefing.
## Where to Stop Along the Way
Mysore is the natural halfway break — good for breakfast, fuel, and a quick stretch. There are plenty of clean restaurants on the Mysore bypass.
After Mysore, options thin out, so top up fuel and snacks in Mysore or Hunsur. Once you're into Coorg the scenery is the reward: coffee estates, spice plantations, and forest. If you have time, Iruppu Falls (about 12 km from Shettigeri) and the Glenlorna Tea Estate are worth a visit on the same trip.
## Where to Stay Near Shettigeri
South Coorg has a wonderful range of stays close to the Barapole. Acepaddlers runs and partners with several homestays ideal for combining with rafting — including the Misty Coorg Homestay (near the Barapole), Thithimathi Heritage Stay, and Lake Lounge Homestay. Staying the night before lets you raft first thing and avoid a punishing same-day round trip.
These are authentic Kodava family stays with home-cooked Coorgi meals — a perfect complement to a day on the river.
