Two of Coorg's best-known rafting names — but they offer very different experiences. Here's an honest comparison of the wild Barapole and the gentle Dubare so you can pick the right one.
## Two Very Different Rivers
When people search for 'rafting in Coorg', two names come up again and again: Barapole and Dubare. They're often mentioned in the same breath, but they are genuinely different experiences — different rivers, different difficulty, different seasons, and different audiences.
The short version: Barapole is the adrenaline run, a monsoon-only Grade III–IV white water experience in South Coorg. Dubare is the gentle, family-friendly float on the Kaveri near Kushalanagar, famous for its elephant camp. Choosing between them comes down to what kind of day you want.
## Barapole: Wild Monsoon White Water
The Barapole River flows through the misty foothills of the Brahmagiri Hills in South Coorg, near T. Shettigeri. During monsoon (June–October) it transforms into a powerful 4.5 km stretch of Grade III–IV white water with four named rapids — Morning Coffee, Grasshopper, Wicked Witch, and Big Bang.
This is real white water rafting: technical, drenching, and genuinely exhilarating. It requires team coordination and a proper safety briefing, and it runs only during the monsoon. Minimum age is 10 years. If you want an adventure that gets your heart racing — and a story to tell afterward — Barapole is the one.
## Dubare: Gentle Family Floats on the Kaveri
Dubare sits on the Kaveri River near Kushalanagar in North Coorg, beside the well-known Dubare Elephant Camp. The rafting here is a calm, scenic float — generally Grade I–II — suitable for young children, grandparents, and anyone who wants the river experience without the intensity.
Dubare's big draw is the combination: an easy paddle plus the elephant camp, where you can watch and interact with elephants. It's a lovely half-day outing for mixed-age families, but it is not a white water adventure in the way Barapole is.
## Head-to-Head Comparison
Rapid grade: Barapole is Grade III–IV (challenging); Dubare is Grade I–II (easy).
Season: Barapole runs only June–October (monsoon); Dubare's calm stretches are accessible across much of the year.
Location: Barapole is in South Coorg near T. Shettigeri; Dubare is in North Coorg near Kushalanagar.
Minimum age: Barapole is 10+; Dubare suits all ages, including young children.
Intensity: Barapole is a high-adrenaline workout; Dubare is a relaxed scenic float.
Best for: Barapole — thrill-seekers and adventurous groups. Dubare — families with small children and first-timers who want calm water.
## Which Should You Choose?
Choose Barapole if you want genuine white water thrills, you're travelling in monsoon, everyone in your group is 10 or older, and an adrenaline rush is the goal. This is the standout adventure experience in Coorg.
Choose Dubare if you have young children or older relatives, you want a gentle and scenic outing, or you're combining rafting with the elephant camp. And remember — if calm water is what you want but you'd still like variety, our Harangi Dam water sports near Kushalanagar offer kayaking, speed boats, banana rides, and paddle boating in one family-friendly spot, year-round.
